Carnarvon Gorge is at its most popular in autumn, winter, and spring. Rainfall is less frequent, often non-existent for months, providing pleasant camping and easy vehicular access to the Gorge. Temperatures during the day are mild and comfortable walking, although at night they can drop to and below zero degrees Celsius. The lack of haze from spring and summer fires makes the view from the lookouts most rewarding in autumn and winter. Whilst the conditions just described are usual, there are exceptions of course. If you do get caught in the Gorge during rain feel privileged, as the majority of visitors never get to see this side of the Gorge’s personality. Providing you prepare for it, walking the Gorge in light rain can be spectacular, with heightened bush smells, glistening foliage and mists enshrouding the cliff-lines. |
